Located on Kruzof Island right off the Pacific Ocean, this destination can be easily accessed via boat or by taking the Kalinin Bay trail. It’s a favorite, short hike for locals, just 2.5 miles each way. Keep an eye on the weather when taking on this hike in the winter, as the area is relatively remote. You’ll find yourself surrounded by an old-growth forest as you stroll along the sand-covered beach and enjoy ocean views.
Between Kalinin Bay and the beach, there are stairs available. It takes most hikers between one and two hours each way, with a gain of 500 feet. Like most hikes in Sitka, summers are recommended, but winter hikes are doable for more experienced hikers. Otherwise, depend on a local boating company or flightseeing tour.
A Hidden Gem
This is considered a moderate hike, and the boardwalk can be slippery. Keep an eye out for roots, which can get buried in snowfall. If you prefer to go by boat, it takes 1.5 hours to reach from Sitka. Boats can dock at Kalinin Bay, and you’ll be warned to keep food items at the hotel—otherwise, bears might sniff out some treats.
If possible, take or rent hiking poles. There’s no cell phone reception in the area, so packing a VHF radio is a good precaution. The Alaska State Parks manages the area, and you can always contact them before heading to the cove to check on conditions and weather.
