Sitka is flanked not only by Jamestown Bay, but also by a generous peppering of islands accessible by boat (in the summer) and planes where you can experience the isolated beauty of the Alaskan wilderness. From the tiny Minett Island to Cannon Island just a few feet from the peninsula, island hopping provides incredible fishing, birding, wildlife viewing and of course photography.
Guertin Island is one of the largest and most popular, easily accessible from the mainland. There’s also Ring Island, nestled close to Guertin via the tidal flats. Dove Island is another option, and all islands have readily available topographical maps for download. If you want to explore Sitka like a local, “island living” is a must.
Accessing the Islands
August is the perfect time to travel to the islands by boat, and a variety of charters and boating companies are available. Connect with Frontier Charters, Angling Unlimited, BJ Boat Rentals, Alaska Yacht Charters or A to Z Sport Fishing Charters to customize your trip.
Alternatively, Air Sitka offers some travel around the area (weather permitting). However, with the islands bunched together and the relatively “warm” Alaska Augusts, it’s well worth it to jet across the water. Make the most of your Sitka getaway, and see every nook and cranny of this beautiful region.
