The great humpback whale migration off the shores of Sitka takes place July – late December. If you’re visiting Sitka for the holidays then you’ll be able to catch the last of the season, and one of the local whale tour companies can help ensure you get the best possible views. Every year, between 200 – 300 humpbacks visit the Sitka area, attracted by the incredible feeding grounds.

It’s common for the whales to “settle down” here for awhile. In November and early December, it’s not unusual to see around 20 each day. Binging on krill throughout this time makes their backs easy to spot as they surface for air or to see their tails as they dive deeply for another mouthful. Breached whales are also most common during this time. Some humpbacks emerge completely out of the water.

They’re prepping for the swim to Hawaii, and some of the creatures might linger into the spring if they have calves with them. The best tour companies have long-standing crew members who “know” some of the whales by their markings.
