If you haven’t been living under a rock for a few years, you will know about the show, The Deadliest Catch.

What: The Deadliest Catch is a TV show on Discovery channel about crab fishing in Alaska, captained by Johnathan and Andy Hillstrand. Fishing in Alaska, all year round, is a difficult and risky task. Some might even say it is one of the deadliest jobs in history.

Where: The deadliest catch takes place in the icy waters of Homer, Alaska.

Watch: You can tune in to the newest season on April 16, Tuesdays at 9/8 central on the Discovery Channel.

History: Crabbing gained popularity in the 1900’s and Alaskan crab fishing used to be done Derby style – where for a few days, there were no restrictions on crabbing and hundreds of fishermen would capture as many crabs as they could. The Derby days negatively affected the crab population and in 2005, a quota system was set in place, limiting the number of crabs that could be caught.
