Northeast of downtown Soldotna is Funny River, as well as a quaint 10-unit campground and popular day area. Head to where the Kenai and Funny River meet, just 11 miles from the town, and you’ll enjoy some fantastic angler access where silver salmon and sockeyes are often found during the summer months.

Located at Mile 12 on Funny River Road, this ADA-friendly site is surrounded by 336 lush acres of Alaskan wilderness. Campers pay $15 per vehicle, but with a comfortable guest room just a few miles away in town, this is most often a day-use fishing spot. However, campers can stake their tent for up to seven days along with a daily $5 parking fee. Restroom facilities and picnic tables/shelters are available.

A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the River …

Birders and wildlife lovers also adore this area for its ample photography opportunities. With just a six-mile stretch showcasing the Kenai National Wildlife Refuge, it’s a moderate hike and you’ll often see moose foraging on the roadside, forest birds jetting from perch to perch and a stroll along the boardwalk might just give you a view of a bald eagle.

Loons and Arctic terns are spotted in August, and if you’re lucky a caribou might just cross your path. Boreal forests flank Funny River Road, attracting a slew of wildlife. You’ll also be treated to views of white and black spruces as well as glacial moraines and wetlands. Originally a homestead in the 1940s, portions are still private property. For the best wildlife experience, head to Brown’s Lake nearby at dawn.
