Part research facility and part educational outreach, the Sitka Sound Science Center is committed to the understanding of various aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems of the state and region. As a scientific hub, Sitka is home to a fascinating environment, and visiting the Center is a great introduction for visitors. Open Thursday – Saturday, admission is just $5, and the on-site gift shop (open Thursday and Friday) is the perfect place to pick up a unique gift or keepsake.
Formerly hosted by the Sheldon Jackson College close to the Sitka National Historic Park, the Center is owned by a collaboration of non-profits. The College began an aquaculture and fisheries program in 1972, and when the college closed in 2007, the Center persisted via the efforts of community dedication. In 2014, a $1.3 million renovation helped turn the site into one of the premier mergers of science, education and outreach in Alaska.
What Will You Discover?
From field courses to special events, the Center is passionate about Sitka’s one-of-a-kind geology and ecology. Visit the onsite aquarium, library and hatchery. Facility rentals are available for special events. You’ll find researchers, educators, students and visitors just like you exploring the various offerings of the Center.
The Touch Tank is the Center’s equivalent of a petting zoo, and the dining options give you a truly unique option for fresh fare in Sitka. Try Ludvig’s famed clam chowder or a scratch-made sandwich from the Chowder Cart. It’s a Sitka specialty also known for BBQ salmon served with brown rice and kale.
