August 17 – 19 marks the annual Golden North Salmon Derby, the most fun fishing event in the state since 1947. Families and those of all ages who adore fishing (or want to learn more) spend three days vying for the biggest Cohos and Kings in the Alaskan waters. You could win prizes, bragging rights, and meet fishing lovers like you. Events take place throughout each day, and live coverage from the local KINY radio station will keep you abreast of the latest catches.

Last year, King Salmon wasn’t accepted due to retention closure, but for 2018 it looks like the fish royalty is back. You won’t want to miss awards night at the Elizabeth Peratrovich Center (ANB Hall), where scholarship awards and trophies are handed out to the best fishermen and women of the year. Held on the last day, weigh-in tickets and entry forms must be presented to claim prizes.

What a Catch!

Raffle prizes are also held throughout the weekend and revealed on prize night. With 71 prizes available for the largest salmon, each winner gets to choose their own prize during this fun-filled final party. The Golden Derby attracts people from all walks of life, and since 1953 the scholarship foundation has awarded over 300 scholarships and $1.7 million to youth.

Whether you want to compete or simply want to join in as a spectator, this is the summer event of the season. Restaurants will be featuring salmon dishes around town, so everyone can get a taste of the competition.
