Celebrating the Mexican Army’s victory over French Forces at the Battle of Puebla, it’s amazing how far this annual celebration has reached—all the way to the Kenai Peninsula! Soldotna and the surrounding region offers a spicy peppering of Cinco de Mayo celebrations, starting with the fiesta at The Duck Inn.

On Saturday, get the party started early with a special Big Breakfast Burrito. During lunch, specials include the Guacamole Burger with fries, tots, coleslaw and a Corona with lime. Free chips and salsa come with any margarita order, and “margaronas” are on special for $10 all day. From Jell-O shots to blind karaoke at 9 p.m., there are giveaways and over 10 types of tequilas available. It’s where the locals celebrate!

A Family-Friendly Affair

Prefer a more relaxed holiday weekend? Mykel’s is a popular restaurant that’s open to revelers of all ages. However, on Cinco de Mayo the restaurant shakes things up with a special beer tasting featuring a number of brews imported from Mexico. Tastings are held from 6:30 – 10 p.m. Paired with diverse appetizers, it’s a more relaxed affair.

The Funny River Cinco de Mayo Festival starts at 6 p.m., and admission is $15 for adults/$7.50 for children. Enjoy chicken enchiladas, chips and salsa, and virgin margaritas at the Funny River visitor center.
