Tlingit

Our first people, the Tlingit, arrived and settled on the land known as Sitka some 10,000 years ago. Tlingit people are called “People on the Outside of Shee”. The Tlingit live a great and practical way of survival before Russians attempt to settle on these islands.

Nowadays, over 16% population of Sitka is the Tlingit ancestry that continues to contribute to the history of Sitka, cultural diversity, and maintaining traditions throughout the time.

Sitka National Historical Park

This historical park holds the annals of Sitka. This site preserves the historical battle between the indigenous Kiks.ádi Tlingit and the invaders, the Russian traders. As you visit the park, you will be awed by the Tlingit and Haida totem poles standing along the coastal trail.

The Sitka Historical Society Museum

Formerly known as Isabel Miller Museum, the Sitka Historical Society is the city museum of Sitka. The museum preserves and promotes to its visitors the stories, events, and artifacts of the human history of Sitka. It has the most diverse and largest collections of Sitka’s artifacts, prints, paintings, and spectacular historical photographs and archival documents.

Sitka indeed holds an interesting story of the past. It preserves its culture and history from thousand years ago up until now.
