Sledding, building snowmen and decadent hot chocolate? Sounds like the perfect way to kick off the holiday season, and Anchorage is a true winter wonderland. Downtown Anchorage becomes a fairytale setting, with businesses competing for the best holiday window displays and offering premium gifts and seasonal treats.
It’s a real city of lights, especially if the Northern Lights happen to be visible while you’re in town. Head out of the city for the best views. Westchester Lagoon is a favorite place to go ice skating, and it’s hot mopped routinely to offer some of the smoothest, safest skating in town. You’ll likely see some horse-drawn sleighs go by, too!
Getting Into the Spirit
The Anchorage Museum offers a fantastic Wonderland of Toys and Dolls of the World in December, complete with a massive tree. You’ll find toys from around the world, and little ones can’t get enough of the festive display. Science in Toyland is still on display, and considered one of the best hands-on experiences Anchorage has ever hosted.
December in Anchorage isn’t complete without a visit to the nearby Reindeer Farm. Fun for all ages with an expert-led tour, the farm is open seven days per week. Adult entry is just $9, making this one of the most unique and affordable day trips out of Anchorage.
