Our favorite winter activity is back in full swing!
These outdoor rinks are also free, just bring your own skates! Typically park hours are from 6 am to 11 pm.
Here are a list of maintained outdoor rinks:
- Cheney Lake
- Cuddy Family Midtown Park
- Goose Lake
- Jewel Lake
- Westchester Lagoon
These rinks are hot mopped daily to keep the ice smooth. To set your mind at ease even more, hot mopping involves a 2 ton truck with 350 galloons of water loaded on it. (In other words, it’s super safe to skate on!)
If you find your own frozen lake to skate on that isn’t on the list, there are a couple safety precautions you should take:
- The ice should be at least 2 inches thick for a single skater and 3 inches for a group
- If you see cracks, and especially water coming up through cracks, it isn’t safe!
- To be extra safe, drill a hole every 150 feet to measure the thickness
Now lace up your skates, dress in layers, and get out there!
